Nominations open for “Cowboys in Every County”

Monday, May 18, 2015

Oklahoma State University has graduated more than 250,000 students who now serve a myriad of industries and represent every walk of life. The latest project of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at the OSU Library endeavors to document the stories of the University’s diverse alumni and showcase the multifaceted nature of Oklahoma.

“Cowboys in Every County” aims to record an interview with at least one OSU graduate in every Oklahoma county. The OOHRP is seeking nominations for alumni residing in Oklahoma who have individual stories that reflect the breath and diversity of the state’s history through OSU’s legacy.

“We are looking for OSU alumni with great stories to tell,” Sarah Milligan, head of OOHRP, said. “We are excited to share pieces of Oklahoma’s culture and history through the contributions and stories of our alumni. We are hoping to attract nominations for stories from a variety of ages, backgrounds and professional fields.”

Nominations will be accepted on a rolling basis through early 2016. The nomination form and more information about the project can be found at cowboys.library.okstate.edu/. Interview selections will be made by the OOHRP staff based on nominations and selection criteria.

This project builds on a foundation of more than 300 OSU alumni interviews collected by the OOHRP, which are available at www.library.okstate.edu/oralhistory/ostate/.

“‘Cowboys in Every County’ is one way the OSU Library is supporting OSU’s 125th anniversary celebration,” Milligan said. “Anyone can follow along with us at our travel blog, as we interview and profile 77 Oklahoma counties through the stories of our alumni.”

Formally established in 2007, the OOHRP at the OSU Library has collected and preserved firsthand accounts from individuals who have played a part in Oklahoma’s history. The Program explores the lives and contributions of Oklahomans from all walks of life.
