An Oklahoma State alumni was recently inducted into the National Collegiate Flag Football Championships Hall of Fame.
Devin Simpson was honored at the ceremony in Pensacola, Fla. this January. Five people were inducted this year, and Simpson was the only referee to be inducted.
Simpson was an intramural student employee at Oklahoma State University from 2005-2009. He was a four-time All-American flag football referee. Simpson was named an All-American in 2006, twice in 2007 and again in 2008. Simpson was also an All-American basketball referee in 2009. Simpson is the only All-American OSU has had and being inducted into the Hall of Fame is an honor that he will always cherish.
“I was actually shocked when Jason Linsenmeyer, the Intramural Coordinator, called and told me the news,” said Simpson.
Simpson began refereeing because he thought it would be a fun way to make some extra spending money. Simpson was hooked from the first time he stepped on the field and continues to officiate games today. During his first year officiating, Simpson attended a regional flag football tournament at the University of Nebraska and then went on to attend the National Flag Football Tournament where he was named an All-American official. Simpson attended national tournaments the following three years where he was also named an All-American.
Simpson made many memories during his time officiating at OSU. His favorite memories have to be the friends that he acquired during the time he was involved with intramural sports.
“I made some of my best friends during this time that I still keep in touch with and share officiating stories with,” said Simpson.
