OSU App Center announces winners of first phase of 4th Annual App Competition

With the winning ideas for mobile applications announced from Phase I of the 4th Annual App Competition, registration for Phase II, development of working apps, has begun. The App Competition, sponsored by the City of Stillwater and the Riata Center for Entrepreneurship in the OSU Spears School of Business, offers Oklahoma State University students a total of $10,000 in prize money to generate app concepts and develop mobile applications that showcase creativity and skills based on the contest theme. The annual competition is organized by the OSU App Center.

This year’s theme, “Pioneering Quality of Life for Stillwater Residents,” asked Phase I participants to come up with ideas for apps that fit the theme, and develop story boards and presentations to be judged by a panel. The two winning Phase I application ideas and the teams or individuals who developed the concepts were:

  • Paws Alert - An app idea designed to help people connect who have lost or found pets in the Stillwater area. The app was developed by OSU student Tyler Weppler.
  • AccessStillwater - A social networking gateway for individuals who are part of the disabled community. The app concept was developed by OSU students Abby Rener, Nicole Gumm, Chelsey Schimmels and Nickole Henke

The winning teams were awarded $500 each while runner ups received $250 each.

In Phase II of the competition, teams of developers and graphic designers will create working mobile apps using one of the two winning ideas from Phase I. The developed apps will be demonstrated to judges in the competition finals in March. A first place and runner up will be chosen for each idea with $3,000 awarded to top finishers and $1,000 to the runner ups.

Phase II registration is now open at http://appcenter.okstate.edu/content/phase-ii. The deadline for registration is January 18, 2016. More information about the competition and the OSU App Center is available at https://appcenter.okstate.edu/.
