OSU Libraries host Latin@ culture event

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

The Oklahoma State University Libraries will host “Our Stories: Our Identity” on Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Edmon Low Library in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Speaker J. Sarah Gonzales will share stories of Latin@ heritage, spoken word poetry, the importance of storytelling, and offer space for reflection and writing. This program is especially geared toward college and high school students, and it is free and open to the public.

“We are excited to offer this program to OSU and the Stillwater community,” project coordinator Karen Neurohr said. “The program will frame cultural identity ethics both in Oklahoma and nationally through poetry, facilitated small and large group dialogue, and a writing activity.”

Gonzales, originally from Muskogee, graduated from OSU in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and holds a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from the University of Arizona.

Program sponsors include OSU Hispanic Student Association, Gender and Women’s Studies, Division of Institutional Diversity, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Stillwater Public Library and Muskogee Public Library.

Funding for this program is provided in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of OHC or NEH.

The OHC is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote meaningful public engagement with the humanities—disciplines such as history, literature, film studies, ethics and philosophy.

The humanities offer a deeper understanding of ourselves and others by confronting us with the questions, values and meanings of the human experience. As the state partner for the NEH, OHC brings people together to explore these ideas through programming and community grants that support book groups, exhibits, film festivals, teacher institutes and more. OHC engages people in their own communities, providing forums for education, critical thinking and productive civil discourse.
