OSU student runs 100 miles for charity

An Oklahoma State University student ran 100 miles this summer — and earned money for charity along the way.
Jordan Richards, a graphic design junior from Flower Mound, Tex., tracked his runs through the app Charity Miles, which allows users to donate to a charity of their choice for every mile they log.
Richards’ love for running existed before he heard about the app. He had previously run in some of the 5Ks offered on campus through the Department of Wellness.
“I have loved running for a while now. I actually crave it. I can really feel a noticeable difference in myself after I go on a run,” Richards said.
What was originally an opportunity to relieve the stresses of school and work soon became an opportunity to raise money for a cause.
“I started running as a stress reliever, but when I heard about this app I was extremely happy. Not only do I benefit physically and mentally from the run, but I get to donate to a good cause,” Richards said.
The app has over 30 charities for users to choose from, including Richards’ favorite, the National Park Foundation. The app donates 25 cents for every mile walked or run, and 10 cents for every mile biked.
Richards still uses the app when he runs, and he encourages others to do the same.
“So many people run and have no clue this exists. And it’s not just for runners — you can use it while walking or biking, too. I tell people about it all the time. If you’re going to go exercise, why not put it to a good cause while you’re at it?” Richards said.
