Thursday, January 8, 2015

The Division of International Studies and Outreach at Oklahoma State University will welcome journalist and Middle East expert Barbara Slavin as a guest speaker on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at noon in room 108 of the Wes Watkins Center.

Slavin is the former assistant managing editor for world and national security at The Washington Times, senior diplomatic reporter for USA Today and editor for the New York Times Week In Review.

Currently a nonresident senior fellow at Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center, Slavin also serves as Washington correspondent for a news website about the Middle East called Al-Monitor.com. She is a regular commentator on U.S. foreign policy and Iran on NPR, PBS and C-SPAN.

Her news assignments have included the U.S. war on terrorism, the Iran-Iraq war, and Arab-Israeli conflict. She has been to Iran nine times and covered the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, on her most recent trip.

Slavin authored the book, “Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the U.S. and the Twisted Path to Confrontation,” which is about the love-hate relationship of Iran and the U.S.

Slavin’s topics of expertise also include Asia, the Syrian conflict, and Iran’s nuclear program. Her talk is free and light Persian snacks will be served.
