SGA, Eskimo Joe’s present $73,000 check to Stillwater Medical Center

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Representatives from the Oklahoma State Student Government Association and Eskimo Joe’s presented a check for $73,000 to Stillwater Medical Center for the #StillwaterStrong campaign Dec. 8.

The #StillwaterStrong official T-shirt was designed shortly after the homecoming tragedy and has been sold for the past month and a half. It was designed and printed by Eskimo Joe’s. More than 9,000 shirts have been sold from the University Store located in the Student Union and Eskimo Joe’s since.

“It’s extremely heartwarming to be a part of something like this,” said Scott Petty, executive director of the SMC Foundation. “This has had such a broad impact on a group of people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s really great that Eskimo Joe’s and the SGA partnered up because this donation is the single largest donation we’ve received to date.”

SGA Senator Jacquelyn Lane worked with the OSU Foundation, the OSU Alumni Association and the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs, as well as SMC and Eskimo Joe’s, to create the shirts and begin the campaign selling them.

“It’s hard for college students to write a check, but students love T-shirts, and they love a good cause,” Lane said. “Using the donations from all these offices and associations helped allow us to sell the shirts and donate 100 percent of the sales to the #StillwaterStrong fund. It became so much bigger than I could have anticipated. We started ordering more shirts by the thousands as they were selling so quickly.”

Both Eskimo Joe’s and the University Store also included a link on their websites for people to purchase #StillwaterStrong shirts from anywhere. Eskimo Joe’s CEO Stan Clark said he felt it was important to help out in any way he could for the campaign.

“We have the capacity to create and produce the shirts,” Clark said. “We also have the platform to reach many people even beyond Stillwater by putting it on our website. It was a very unique opportunity for us. Giving back to the community is part of our culture at Joe’s.”

To date, the #StillwaterStrong campaign has raised more than $366,000. Because of all the donations, SMC recently announced it will not charge the victims for the treatments they received.

“We have a fantastic hospital, a financially sound hospital,” Petty said. “And the ability for us to not charge any of the people that were seen in our hospital that day is a huge benefit for our community and a huge benefit to our patients.”
