Oklahoma State students have the opportunity to thank the Stillwater community during The Big Event on April 16.

The annual day of service consists of groups completing various jobs for Stillwater residents and businesses. Last year, around 1,700 students served more than 270 people around the city.

Alex Marianos, director of Big Event, says volunteering not only gives students the chance to interact with the community, but also allows them to make someone’s day.

“Students who volunteer always come back when they finish the job and can't stop smiling because they know that they made a difference and that makes them feel good,” said Marianos, who has served on Big Event leadership for all four years of her collegiate career.

Like Marianos, several students participate in the service event year after year. Micah Moore, strategic communications junior, has been involved with the Big Event since her freshman year. She said students can get a sense of something greater than themselves by volunteering.

“I feel like it can be so easy to be in a college bubble and forget that we are not the only ones in this town,” Moore said. “It is a great way to thank the residents of Stillwater for sharing their hometown with us.”

Big Event provides all tools and equipment necessary for completing jobs. The organization is accepting job request applications and student volunteer applications from Stillwater residents and businesses until April 11.

Meet with big event leadership on campus to receive more information about volunteering and get some free snacks during big event on-campus awareness days March 29-April 1 and April 11-12.

Applications can be found at sga.okstate.edu/applications under “2016 Big Event Volunteer Registration Form.”
