Kelsey Speer

Oklahoma State University student Kelsey Speer has been selected as a finalist for a 2016 Truman Scholarship. Kelsey is a junior from Stillwater majoring in biochemistry with a minor in international studies. An active member of the Honors College with an outstanding academic record, Speer has an extensive history of leadership and service.

She has participated in mission trips to New Mexico and Haiti, volunteered and interned with Ubuntu Youth in South Africa, and last fall studied abroad in Slovenia where she coordinated volunteer groups at Syrian refugee camps.

If she receives the Truman Scholarship, Speer plans to pursue a dual master’s degree/juris doctor degree program offered through Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University Law School. The six-year program appeals to Speer because she hopes to advocate for members of society without access to healthcare, treat victims of sexual exploitation, and promote public policy related to the prevention and prosecution of human trafficking.

The Truman Foundation typically receives more than 600 nominations from approximately 300 institutions nationwide, and finalists are selected based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement. Approximately 200 finalists will participate in regional interviews between March 4 and April 8, and 55-65 Truman Scholars will be announced April 22. These students each receive up to $30,000 for a public service-related graduate degree, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.

Because of its many Truman scholars, OSU was designated as Oklahoma’s first Truman Honor Institution in 2000. OSU’s Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research enhances undergraduate education opportunity through scholarship and fellowship success, undergraduate research, and international experience.
