New program provides a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to car ownership on campus

Oklahoma State University (OSU) launched a new partnership with Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, to offer a Zipcar car sharing program on campus. The convenient, self-service transportation option is available at an affordable rate 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students, faculty, and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community over the age of 21.

OSU will initially offer two vehicles, a Ford Focus Hatchback named “Fjordlander” and a Ford Escape named “John”. The Zipcars will have designated parking spots located in campus lots 26 and 51A for convenient pick-up and return.

OSU members can join for $15, with rates for Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. After the first year, members will pay an annual membership fee of $25. Gas, insurance, and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates, and cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. OSU students, faculty and staff can join Zipcar at www.zipcar.com/OKState.

“We are very excited to launch Zipcar on the Oklahoma State University campus.  Their car sharing program will add yet another great transportation option for our students,” said Steve Spradling, director of parking and transportation services.

Members with iPhones and Android devices may download the Zipcar mobile app to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.

“Zipcar is now available at Oklahoma State University giving students the freedom to get off campus for a night out at the movies, a job interview, or to volunteer at a local non-profit,” said Katelyn Bushey, director of university programs, Zipcar. “Additionally, Zipcar membership is universal so students can reserve a car when they’re back at home instead of borrowing one.”

Zipcar is the largest and most longstanding campus car sharing provider with a presence on more than 500 colleges and universities across North America, from small private colleges to large public universities. Zipcar provides on-demand access to a variety of makes and models, giving students, faculty and staff the freedom to get around on and off campus.
