OSU plans 9/11 commemorative events
Tuesday, September 3, 2019
First responders, global war on terror military veterans and supporters of both are encouraged to attend Sept. 11 events on the Oklahoma State University campus.
The 9/11 Remembrance Service and Breakfast in the OSU Student Union Ballroom runs from 8-10 a.m. Dr. John J. Frucci III, OSU Forensic Sciences assistant professor and director of the Arson, Explosives, Firearms and Tool Marks Investigation graduate certificate program, is the featured speaker. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m.
Nearly 3,000 people died on Sept. 11, 2001, when extremists hijacked four commercial aircraft, flying two into the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon outside Washington D.C., and the fourth crashing into a rural field in Pennsylvania. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
Frucci is a bomb specialist who spent more than a month at the site of the twin towers following 9/11 working to recover victims. The event is hosted by OSU Fire Council and OSU’s Office of Student Veteran Success.
Fire Council will have its 9/11 Memorial on display and the Stillwater Fire Department will showcase a static display with Fire Prevention Programs.
DAV Mobile Service
The DAV Mobile Service Office will have veteran service officers from the Oklahoma
Department of Disabled American Veterans to answer questions and assist in filing
benefit claims with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A benefits briefing will
be held at 9:45 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Officer assistance is available
from 9:45 a.m.-4 p.m. at the upper level of the Student Union North Plaza.
“These officers are well-versed in providing counseling, completing and filing benefit forms; they simply ask that you bring any related information you may have, including medical records, DD 214s, and prior correspondence with the VA to help them along,” said Rick Hansen, coordinator of the Office of Student Veteran Success.
