Oklahoma State University students competed on Thursday for the honor of Mr. OSU in the inaugural, titular competition hosted by the Student Union Activities Board.
At the end of the night, graduate student Korbin Hamner was crowned the first-ever Mr. OSU.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be Mr. OSU,” Hamner said. “Thank you to the judges, Student Union Activities Board and my fellow students for this recognition. I am honored to hold a title that illustrates just how much I love this university!”
The evening began with an onstage forum, where the panel of judges asked participants pertinent, global questions to test their knowledge and performance under pressure. Round two of the competition, dubbed “The Talent Portion,” had candidates presenting a special skill or talent to the audience. Lastly, competitors took to the stage to show off their best formal evening wear and strut their stuff. The entire event was hosted by Miss OSU 2022 Millie Bryant.
A panel of four judges, using a predetermined template and guidelines, gave each candidate a score of up to 25 for each portion of the competition. The totals of all three categories were then added together for the candidate’s final score.
Hamner was crowned Mr. OSU at the end of the night, winning the inaugural competition with his incredible rendition of “Believe.” He was awarded a $500 bursar refund in honor of his achievement. The runner-up, Cameron Payne, received a $225 bursar refund. Temitope (Tobi) Olapade was voted Crowd Favorite by the audience and received a $150 bursar refund. Warren the Cowboy, a four-year-old OSU superfan and university sensation, presented the winners with their awards.
"Organizing this inaugural event has been a wonderful experience,” said Ashley Welch, Student Union Activities Board Spirit Director. “I could not have done it without my committee, my advisors, and most of all, the men of OSU. They have been a pleasure to work and truly exemplify the Cowboy Code through their dedication and love to our university. I couldn't be any prouder."
The 11 competitors, ranging from freshman to graduate students, all currently attend the university and applied for the prestigious competitions places months ago. The 2022 Mr. OSU candidates were: Ishraque Borshon, Jacob Castro, Jonah Kramer, Chance Greene, Hamner, Francisco Hernandez, Daytona Hodson, Olopade, Payne, Kaleb Runte and DM York.
