Godspell is described as community, energetic and unique. Godspell opens at 7:30 p.m.
on April 27 in the Vivia Locke Theatre in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.
A masterful retelling of the original sensation Godspell from three-time Grammy and
Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, the 2012 revival is injected with contemporary
references and dazzling new arrangements. A small group of people helps Jesus Christ
tell different parables by using a wide variety of storytelling techniques and a hefty
dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville,
is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly
into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and
love come vibrantly to life.
“Directing this musical has been an adventure. Because the show is built around the
formation of community, we took the approach of giving the cast direct creative input.
All of the stories told in act one was created by the cast playing and discovering
how they wanted to tell each story,” Director Devon Hunt said. “This has made the
show uniquely their own in a way that few other shows can accomplish.”
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m., April 27-29, and 2 p.m. on April 30 in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets can be purchased prior to showtime online or at the box office before each
show.
“This show is worth seeing because the core principles of love, community and forgiveness
that tie all of the stories together are just as important today as they were when
these stories were first told,” Hunt said. “It’s also just a really fun show.”
Tickets are available online or you can call the box office at 405-744-6094. The ticket office will open one hour
prior to each showing. Ticket prices are $7 for students, $8 for seniors and $12 for
general admission.
