Oklahoma State University recognized students, faculty and staff committed to a student-focused initiative during the inaugural Ideal Graduate Celebration on Thursday in the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center.
Rooted in four key areas — professional preparedness, engaged citizenship, ethical leadership and personal responsibility — the Ideal Graduate initiative is designed to developing graduates with the skills and competencies to make a positive impact in the workforce and their communities.
“The launch of the Ideal Graduate initiative reinforced our commitment to providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for success,” OSU President Jim Hess said. “I've talked to so many of you over the last 90 days, and I’m so impressed with the high quality of character and values that all of you represent. If I could be just a little bit more like you, I'm going to be okay.
“This afternoon, we recognize students who have gone above and beyond in the classroom and in their community. Whether in leadership roles, through volunteer work, or by overcoming personal challenges, today’s honorees represent what it means to be an OSU Cowboy.”
This event was a collaboration between OSU Career Services and the Hargis Leadership Institute, which will continue to recognize students demonstrating the Ideal Graduate competencies for years to come.
Sponsors Eskimo Joe’s Promotional Products, Simmons Bank and Tinker Federal Credit Union helped award $5,500 in scholarships to outstanding students.
Three students were selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their exceptional achievements and meaningful engagement in high-impact practices during their time at OSU. Their dedication to personal and professional growth exemplifies the values of the Ideal Graduate.
Ryan Patton, a natural resource ecology and management senior in the Ferguson College of Agriculture, received the award for his work ethic, leadership and unwavering commitment to service and learning at the OSU Student Farm mentoring new student employees and supporting collaborative projects.
“Being named an Ideal Graduate is more than just a title to me. It’s a reflection of the values I’ve worked hard to live by during my time at OSU: being accountable, dedicated, and always striving to grow,” Patton said. “It represents the countless moments, big and small, where I chose to show up, to lead with purpose and to learn with intention. This recognition isn’t just about what I’ve accomplished so far, but about the kind of future I’m committed to building: one where I can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and in the world around me.”
Kayleen Sugianto, a zoology senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized for her undergraduate research and internships with CAS Research Administration and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, where she built strong relationships and made a lasting impact.
“Over the past four years, others, including myself, have seen me grow as a person and a professional not only because I strive to make each of my goals reality by seizing every opportunity, but because I reached for the stars that kept me afloat every day: my family, friends, community, and beyond,” Sugianto said. “I know they'll hear me say this and be humble, but I hope they realize the impact they have on me and the morals I have developed and will uphold to make everyone's lives even just a little bit brighter as they did for me."
Marthalicia Vasquez, a master’s student in hospitality and tourism management in the Spears School of Business, was honored for her leadership as a graduate teaching assistant and manager at Taylor’s Restaurant, where she guided students in professional development and campus involvement.
“Being recognized as an Ideal Graduate means so much to me. It’s more than just an honor—it’s a reflection of the passion, purpose, and heart I’ve poured into every part of my journey," Vasquez said. "I’ve always strived to grow not only for myself and my career, but to uplift others, to open doors, and to be a source of support and inspiration for students and the broader OSU community. To have that seen and acknowledged is truly humbling.”
Five other students were selected to receive $500 scholarships for their impactful contributions and active participation in high-impact experiences at OSU: Anixza Rivera, Amanda Eilerman, Lillian Adams, Gretchen Garrett and Victoria Smith.
The ceremony not only recognized students but also the faculty and staff who guided them along the way.
“It is my great honor today to recognize two outstanding individuals who have gone above and beyond in shaping and guiding our students on their journey to becoming the Ideal Graduate at Oklahoma State University,” OSU Provost Jeanette Mendez said. “The Ideal Graduate Initiative is about more than just academic success; it’s about fostering leadership, community engagement and a commitment to personal and professional growth.”
The faculty award for the Ideal Graduate Initiative was presented to Dr. Howard Sanborn, a professor and the department head for the Department of Political Science. Sanborn was recognized for consistently demonstrating a passion for nurturing students in the classroom and in their overall development as individuals and leaders.
Dr. Mendez said Sanborn quickly took the initiative with the Ideal Graduate imperative to integrate the four core competencies into the political science curriculum. He has co-led students on multiple study abroad trips, served as a mentor to several undergraduate and graduate students, and contributed to a number of OSU campus initiatives.
The staff award for the Ideal Graduate Initiative was presented to Jawauna Harding, an associate athletic director for student-athlete leadership and development, for her commitment to helping students navigate challenges, connect with resources and become more engaged in their university and community.
Mendez said Harding has gone above and beyond over this academic year, bringing the Ideal Graduate competencies to life for student-athletes.
