Oklahoma State University has announced a national search for the next dean of its Honors College.
The Honors College serves the entire university, with students majoring in more than 175 academic disciplines currently enrolled. Last fall, the college set a record with 3,843 students — its highest total enrollment — as it continues to expand its role in the university system. Housed in OSU’s original campus building, Old Central, the Honors College holds a distinctive place among the student body.
The unit recently received a $1 million gift to establish its first endowed chair, the John and Terri Shaffer Endowed Chair, marking a significant milestone in its continued growth.
OSU is seeking a candidate who has earned a doctorate or terminal degree and has a distinguished record of achievement in teaching, research and service that meets qualifications for appointment at the rank of professor with tenure. The ideal candidate will also have meaningful experience in academic leadership and honors instruction, as well as a demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with all college stakeholders.
The next dean should have a strong understanding of the breadth of disciplines and programs at OSU; demonstrate intellectual leadership that inspires others; show proven skills in strategic management; understand scholarship and the value of interdisciplinary collaboration; and exhibit the capacity to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and external partners in business, industry and education. Candidates should also provide evidence of the ability to attract and manage external funding.
Dr. Keith Garbutt, the inaugural dean of the Honors College, has announced his retirement after serving since 2014.
While applications and nominations will be accepted until the position is filled, interested parties are encouraged to submit their materials by Feb. 27, 2026, for full consideration. Candidates may apply at this link.
