OSU and Tulsa Public Schools Form Urban Education Partnership

Oklahoma State University’s College of Education and Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) have formed a partnership to prepare teachers for the urban classroom.

“This partnership is a great opportunity for both OSU and TPS,” Dr. Christine Ormsbee, head of OSU’s School of Teaching and Curriculum Leadership, said.  “OSU teacher candidates will enhance learning first-hand about the unique challenges and rewards of teaching in urban high need schools through high quality clinical experiences and professional development.  The program also provides TPS with the opportunity to attract excellent new teachers to their district and to help them acquire the skills they will need.”

OSU teacher candidates admitted to the program will complete field experiences in TPS partner schools. They will participate in TPS professional development along side current district teachers. In addition, OSU teacher candidates will student teach in the school district and successful graduates will be given priority hiring status.

Partner schools include Celia Clinton, Disney and Mark Twain Elementary schools; Foster Middle School and Lewis & Clark Middle School; and Central High School and Hale High School.

To be admitted to the program, OSU teacher education candidates must complete a written application and interview with a panel of educators representing OSU and TPS. Admissions for Spring 2011 semester will begin December 6, 2010. Applications can be accessed online at http://education.okstate.edu/peu/field. Interviews are scheduled for December 9 - 17.
