OSU Physical Education Program Offers Weekly Programming for Homeschool Youth
Monday, February 29, 2016
Physical education students at Oklahoma State University are leading a 10-week program specifically for homeschool students in second through fifth grades.
“We know that the Stillwater area has a very large group of homeschoolers, and we wanted to find a way to help them gain quality experiences in PE,” said Tim Baghurst, physical education program coordinator at OSU. “We saw this as another way to help our students gain practical teaching experiences before they student-teach as seniors.”
Dr. Nilo Ramos leads the program and helped develop it.
“We wanted to start small and develop the program well before we hopefully expand it next year,” Ramos said. “Our students are teaching non-traditional activities in this class, so it’s great to see them get to try out creative games and activities to kids rather than their peers in the class.”
The homeschool students meet once a week on Friday for an hour, and the feedback has
been positive.
“We’re always looking for new educational opportunities and we really appreciate
that the PE program at OSU would think of including homeschoolers,” said Kelli Davis,
a mother of two in the program. “We appreciate how OSU programs like this serve our
community. I know our boys look forward to it every week and feel confident they are
well taken care of in a safe environment.”
