Applied Exercise Science Student Works at Health FairOklahoma State University students and faculty from the College of Education’s applied exercise science program recently volunteered during a health fair at Spanish Cove, a continuing care retirement community in Yukon.

A group of 20 students, both undergraduate and graduate, and faculty members conducted a range of health and fitness tests during the special event for more than 350 Spanish Cove residents and staff.

“The Health Fair was a tremendous opportunity for our students to gain some hands-on experience and for our program to give back,” applied exercise science assistant professor Jason DeFreitas said. “We are glad to establish a relationship with Spanish Cove. Wellness Director Debbie Miller was fantastic to work with and I think it was a great experience for everyone involved.”

OSU students managed stations and led residents and staff through a range of tests to evaluate balance, grip, reach and more.

Taryn Blackstock, a freshman applied exercise student from Prosper, Texas, took residents and staff through a Get Up and Go Test, timing them as they stand Applied Exercise Science Student Works at Health Fairfrom a seated position and walk an eight-foot circle.

“I am sharing results to let the residents know if (his/her) percentage is above or below average based on age group,” Blackstock explained. “I have always enjoyed giving back, but this is the first time to incorporate my chosen degree.”

Blackstock, who is an OSU Freshman Research Scholar, plans to go to physical therapy school after completing her bachelor’s degree.

Johnnye Ruder, a junior in the applied exercise science degree program, said she enjoyed the experience.

“(The experience) is helping me decide what I want to do after graduating. I have loved being here and had a lot of fun. This was a great way to connect us to the older generation and also great practice for us,” Ruder said. “(As students) we are really appreciative of being here. The residents have been engaged and I think every person had thanked us.”
