Graduate Students Honored

During the annual spring awards ceremony hosted by the Graduate College and the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association (GPSGA) on April 14, five Oklahoma State University College of Education graduate students were recognized for their distinguished achievements.
Michelle Miller and Darci Klein won the Summer Dissertation Fellowship, which supports summer research for outstanding
full-time post-candidacy OSU doctoral students from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary
program. This fellowship also includes a $6,000 stipend and a tuition waver for up
to three hours.
Miller, a leisure studies Ph.D. student, will be utilizing this fellowship for research on her study, “The Impact of Recreational Physical Activity on Symptom Severity of PTSD among Student Military Veterans.” The purpose of this study will be to determine if implementing a recreational therapy facilitated physical activity program and finding alternatives to traditional treatment can improve symptom severity of PTSD among military veterans who are returning to an academic setting to pursue an education.
Klein, an Educational Psychology Ph.D. student, will be conducting research this summer for her study, “The Relationship of Self-Compassion and Hope with Quality of Life for Individuals with Bleeding Disorders.” Her study will be looking at two factors, self-compassion and hope, as possible predictors of quality of life in individuals with Hemophilia and Von Willebrand disease. There has been minimal research studying the psychological quality of life of individuals with bleeding disorders, and this study will contribute to this gap in literature.
Caitlin Barnes, a Ph.D. graduate in Environmental Science, received a Graduate Research Excellence Award. The honor recognizes outstanding accomplishments reflected in master’s theses or doctoral dissertations.
The GPSGA also recognized the 2017 Graduate College Ambassadors, a group of honored volunteer graduate students, who are passionate and excited about OSU and their graduate education experience. Roman Peterson and Theresa Riles, both Educational Leadership Studies students, were recognized as the 2017 Ambassadors for the College of Education.
