Kamm Lecture to Examine Higher Education and Civic Leadership

The Oklahoma State University College of Education will welcome Dr. Harry Boyte, co-director of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg College, as the speaker for the 2017 Robert B. Kamm Distinguished Lecture in Higher Education on Tuesday, February 21. Boyte’s address is entitled “Educating the Citizen Professional: Higher Education and the Future of Civic Leadership.” The 25th edition of the Kamm Lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. in Willard Hall room 010 and will be streamed live on http://www.OState.tv.

Boyte founded the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the University of
Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs more than two decades ago
and he continues as a senior fellow and graduate faculty member at the institute.
Boyte is an architect of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship’s public work approach
to civic engagement and democracy, a conceptual framework of citizenship that has
gained worldwide recognition for its theoretical innovations and its practical effectiveness
in translating lessons from community organizing into institutional and professional
change. He is the author of nine books on citizenship, democracy, and community organizing.
In the 1960s, he worked for the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a field secretary
with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the Civil Rights Movement.
The Kamm Lecture is named for Robert B. Kamm, Oklahoma State University President
from 1966-1977, who served the university for more than 45 years. Annually, this event
serves as a policy-impacting lecture that brings higher education leaders, private
and public sector leaders together to examine important issues in higher education.
