Teresa Jackson receives honor for mentoring undergraduates in research

The College of Human Sciences recently recognized excellence in graduate education. Dr. Christine Johnson, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies presented four awards to students and faculty for their dedication to fostering research and graduate studies.

Nutritional Sciences Ph.D. student Teresa Jackson received the College of Human Sciences Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research Award. The award recognizes outstanding mentoring of undergraduates of graduate students in research activities outside of classroom teaching.

Jackson is a doctoral student in nutrition and is the partnership and evaluation coordinator for the Eagle Adventure program.

Jackson is one of only 40 applicants selected to join Health Policy Research Scholars, a new program led by Johns Hopkins University with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She meets with scholars from across the country to collaborate and identify ways to solve persistent challenges in health and well-being issues in underserved areas of the country.

Her nominator said Jackson makes sure the undergraduate research assistants have tasks to complete and encourages them to learn new skills as they work on their projects.

Dr. Christine Johnson, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, said graduate mentors are important to research in the college.

“The College of Human Sciences values the support, motivation and perspective that graduate students bring to the undergraduate’s understanding of the research experience,” she said. “This award acknowledges and encourages graduate students to be engaged with their mentees.”
