Human Sciences students claim Wentz and Freshman Research Scholar awards

Four College of Human Sciences students were among the award winners at Oklahoma State University’s 2018 Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Nutritional Sciences freshman Nathan Mitchell was the overall winner among Freshman Research Scholar Posters/Presentations for his study, “Assessing the validity of an abbreviated meal challenge in predicting post-meal metabolic markers.” Mitchell, who is advised by Dr. Sam Emerson, received a $500 prize for his win.
In addition, Madison Brook (Design, Housing and Merchandising) and Samantha Coats (Human Development and Family Science) received honorable mention honors and a $250 prize in the Freshman Research Scholar category. Brook’s study is entitled “The Relationship between the Home Environment and Aging in Place” and her adviser is Dr. Gina Peek. Coats was recognized for her presentation “Kinship Foster Care: Barriers Before Relief.” She is advised by Dr. Lana Beasley.
Senior Nick Koemel received honorable mention honors in the Wentz Research Scholar category for his study, “Metabolic and Behavioral Responses to Prey Nutrient Content.” Koemel is a double major in the College of Human Sciences’ nutritional sciences program and the College of Arts and Sciences’ integrative biology program. For his Wentz project, he was advised by Dr. Shawn Wilder in integrative biology.
