OSU fashion design and production and merchandising programs earn top rankings

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

The fashion design and production and merchandising programs in the OSU College of Human Sciences have been ranked among the top 15 programs in the country for 2019, according to Fashion-Schools.org. The fashion design and production program ranks seventh nationally among public schools and 14th nationally among both public and private schools offering similar programs. The merchandising program ranks 11th nationally among public schools and 15th nationally among both public and private schools. Specifically in the southwest region, the OSU programs are ranked second and third respectively among fashion design and merchandising schools.

The rankings compare hundreds of U.S. fashion school programs based on the school’s reputation and its admission selectivity, student outcomes, graduation success and the results of an extensive proprietary survey conducted with school and industry stakeholders.

Both programs are housed in the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising, where students have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Research spaces include the Gerber Technology FashionTech Design and Development Center, the Mixed Reality Showroom and Lab, the Product Design and Testing Lab, and the brand-new Human Environmental Factors Lab, which provides an interactive environment to explore and promote interdisciplinary evidence-based research related to design, aging and health.

“The technology we use in our teaching and research keeps us at the cutting edge of what our industry needs,” said Dr. Lynn Boorady, who joined the college as head of the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising in July. “We want students to learn what is happening now and prepare them for what the industry will be once they graduate. Our faculty conduct research that improves the way we live, shop and interact with our environment. We offer great support for students through scholarships, industry connections, real-life projects and experiences before graduation. This helps give them a foothold for success.”
