Thursday, March 4, 2021
Halle Hannon, from Mustang, Okla., studies nutritional sciences, with an option in human nutrition/pre-medical sciences and a minor in microbiology. She plans to become a physician specializing in oncology, serving on both local and international medical teams.
What is your proudest accomplishment at OSU?
My proudest accomplishment is becoming the woman that I am today. I have learned how to accept my failures, learn from them and not run away when things have gotten tough. Learning to step out of my comfort zone is something of which I am extremely proud.
What is an experience that challenged you?
I have learned a lot from many experiences at OSU. One of my toughest classes was organic chemistry with Dr. Berlin. This was one of the first classes or which I had to reshape my entire study method for exams. While this class was tough, Dr. Berlin was amazing. I visited him in his office hours weekly. He truly cared about his students and wanted them to succeed and I could definitely see that through the interactions that we had.
Who has made a difference in your time at OSU?
I also want to mention my advisor, Dr. Clarke. Dr. Clarke has not only mentored me, but has shown me what all I am capable of and the potential that I have. College is definitely not easy, and having support from my professors and mentors has impacted my life for the better.
What have you been involved with at OSU?
I have served on the Human Sciences Student Council, volunteered with Into the Streets and the Global Medical Brigades, and served as public relations officer for the American Medical Student Association. I am an OSU Diamond Doll and Alpha Delta Pi sorority member. I supported guest relations at the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center and intramural sports at the Colvin Recreation Center.
How did studying nutritional sciences prepare you for a medical career?
While I did take all of the needed sciences for medical school, I was also able to take my nutrition curriculum, giving me an extra tool to use later on. The digestive system and metabolism are important when understanding various diseases, and my degree gives me a tool to understand the body in a unique way.
