Meet Kelsey Lauerman, Outstanding Senior

Thursday, March 4, 2021

Kelsey Lauerman, from Cushing, Okla., majors in child and family services. She plans to attend law school this fall, specializing in family law for domestic violence survivors, families and juveniles.

What activities have you been a part of at OSU?

I have served as a College of Education and Human Sciences Ambassador, President’s Leadership Council facilitator, campus tour guide and member of Big Brothers Big Sisters. I was also a law intern at Wings of Hope Crisis Services.

What is an experience that has stretched you as a person?

As part of my developmental disabilities class, I participated in the “Let’s Take a Walk” program. I was partnered with a student with a developmental disability, and through weekly walks, I learned about their day-to-day life and their struggles and accomplishments from the week. This class took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to make a friend I would otherwise not have met.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment at OSU has been all of the lives I have impacted. I feel like I was truly able to make a difference.

What sparked your interest in child and family services as a major?

I knew I wanted to work with children and families after I graduated, I just did not know exactly how. The child and family services major gave me the opportunity to explore several different career paths while still earning the credits needed to graduate in four years.

While working with Wings of Hope for a summer internship, I worked closely with the family lawyer and enjoyed my tasks. I felt like I was really making a difference in other peoples’ lives, and I knew the career path I wanted to pursue.

What message do you have for someone who may be unfamiliar with the opportunities and importance of majoring in child and family services?

There are so many different routes you can take with this major. You do not have to go into it set on one specific field. The faculty really work with you and give you the opportunity to explore every possible avenue you could take. I think that if you are unsure of what you want to do in the future, but you know you want to work with other people, child and family services is the major you should go into.
