Meet Madison Brook, Senior of Significance

Thursday, March 4, 2021

Madison Brook, from Tulsa, Okla., majors in interior design. She is pursuing a master’s in interior design with plans to work for a commercial design firm specializing in healthcare design.

Why are you passionate about healthcare design?

In high school, I wasn’t sure which major to pursue, but I knew I wanted to help people with my career. As I learned more about interior design, I realized how influential the built environment is to a person’s mental and physical health.

Many healthcare workers work 12-hour shifts, and patients live in hospitals sometimes for weeks or months, with family frequently visiting, too. My design has the ability to improve their quality of life. I can help nurses be more efficiently travel around the hospital, family members find their loved ones’ rooms faster and sick patients feel more at home.

What experience at OSU most stretched you as a leader?

The P.E.T.E. Project Living Learning Program challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. When I became a mentor for the P.E.T.E. Project I was extremely shy, but Scott King, the advisor of the organization, believed in me and helped me to grow and step out of my comfort zone in order to help other freshmen who were quiet and shy like I was.

My proudest accomplishment over the past four years has been watching the freshmen I have mentored find their place at OSU. Freshman year is a year of growth, change and challenges, and I have been so blessed to be able to work with many freshmen, helping them find their home at the university I love so much.

What activities have you been a part of while at OSU?

I have served as student chapter president for Phi Upsilon Omicron, the American Society of Interior Designers and the International Facility Management Association. I’ve also served on the College of Human Sciences Student Council and been a College of Human Sciences Ambassador.

Interior design is a very hands-on major. What has been a particularly interesting project?

For one class, we built a real-life model of a two-story co-working facility. For this project, we designed the layout of the space, chose the furniture and materials for the space, and then laser cut and built the furniture pieces to create the model. This project was challenging but also so much fun because it was so hands-on.
