FAA Challenges Students to Develop Mobile Apps
Wednesday, January 16, 2013
The FAA’s Design Competition for Universities is offered for the 2012 – 2013 academic year and includes a new design challenge Innovative Application of FAA Data.
The new Innovative Application of FAA Data design challenge challenges students to
use FAA, industry, travel and airport-relevant data to develop a mobile application
for use for by smart phones and tablets that is innovative and commercially viable.
The Competition’s broad challenge categories embrace many engineering, science, information
technology, psychology, and management disciplines. The new challenge particularly
encourages designs from interdisciplinary teams. The FAA is making data available
to student developers participating in the Competition.
Using the combination of aviation data and other data, the application should be of
interest to the public and assist with a range of considerations such as, but not
limited to: total travel time, traffic delays, airport security congestion, and flight
schedules and delays. Students must follow design guidelines in developing and presenting
their mobile app. The mobile app will be fully described in the design package. In
addition, the working prototype must be demonstrated by the individual or team designer
in a video posted to a password protected online site. Specific posting information
will be provided on the Competition website. The Mobile App Design Package and video
uplink are due on April 19, 2013. Note: For this Challenge area, students are encouraged
to form interdisciplinary teams. Students who do so can receive additional points
in the evaluation process. Individual designers should also show evidence of an interdisciplinary
approach.
See Evaluation Criteria for the Innovative Application of Aviation Data Challenge as posted on the website: http://FAADesignCompetition.odu.edu
The Competition is open to individual and student teams at U.S. colleges and universities (both undergraduate and graduate) working under the mentorship of a faculty advisor. Winners earn cash awards and first place winners have the opportunity and travel funds to present their design at FAA Headquarters in summer 2013. A notice of intent is strongly encouraged. Design submissions are due April 19, 2013.
