Wednesday, July 17, 2013

(STILLWATER, Okla., July 16, 2013) -- A team of undergraduate students from Oklahoma State University has been selected by NASA to participate in the 2014 Exploration Habitat (X-Hab) Academic Innovation Challenge.

The inter-disciplinary OSU team includes students from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Architecture and Architectural Engineering, School of Industrial Engineering, and the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising.  Throughout the 2013-14 academic year the team will design, manufacture, assemble and test systems and concepts that could be used in future deep-space habitats.

“Involvement in X-Hab brings a real-world and hands-on component to our spacecraft design and architecture education,” said Jamey Jacob, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

“The multi-disciplinary project involves students from across the university andrequires that they interact directly with NASA to meet their specific design requirements for manned deep-space flight and long- duration habitation. It is a great opportunity for students to get involved on the ground floor of thedesign and development of next-generation space habitats,” said Jacob.

OSU is one of six universities selected.  This is NASA’s fourth year to hold the challenge and OSU’s fourth time to compete.  OSU is the only university in the nation that has been selected to participate in every year of the program.
