Dr. Garry H. Gregory, adjunct professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at Oklahoma State University Stillwater, Okla., was recently elected to the Board of Governors of the national Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is expected to become president of the Geo-Institute in 2016 through the normal process of succession. The Geo-Institute encompasses geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and similar geo-professions.
“Garry possesses that rare balance between practitioner and academician,” said Stephen Wright, PhD, Professional Engineer, a Geo-Institute Past President and professor emeritus of civil engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. “His technical knowledge is outstanding and he has extensive experience in practice.”
Jean-Louis Briaud, PhD, PE, a Geo-Institute Past President, and professor of civil engineering at Texas A&M University agrees with the nomination as well.
“Garry is very technically competent and very dedicated to his profession by his words and by his deeds,” Briaud said. “While he has been a practitioner for most of his career, he has a keen interest in teaching and the discovery process. This gives him the excellent balance to represent a broad spectrum of our members.”
At OSU, Gregory teaches graduate geotechnical engineering courses, conducts sponsored research, and serves as an advisor and committee chair for graduate students. He is a member of the National Academy of Geo-Professionals and holds the Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE) certification. He has more than 60 publications in journals, conference proceedings and periodicals; has authored and published more than 500 major technical reports for consulting projects; and is the author of an advanced slope stability analysis software program that is used by geotechnical engineers, civil engineers and engineering geologists.
“I appreciate the confidence the Geo-Institute showed in me by electing me to the board,” Gregory said. “I look forward to serving the membership, geotechnical engineering field and OSU through my service on the board.”
Gregory is a licensed professional engineer in 12 states and a member of the National Civil Engineering Honor Society Chi Epsilon. He currently serves as the committee chairman for the Embankments, Dams, and Slopes Committee for the Geo-Institute and is the Principal Consultant with Gregory Geotechnical in Stillwater.
Gregory and his wife, Jan, live in Stillwater with their grandson Haden.
