Wednesday, April 29, 2015
Milecia Matthews, a graduate student in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University, was awarded a Professions Fellowship through the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
"I'm very thankful to have received this prestigious award,” says Matthews. “I'm also thankful to be in my graduate program. Oklahoma State University has changed my life in ways I didn't even think were possible."
The AAUW announced 241 fellowships and grants for 2015-16 academic year. This year’s group of women and nonprofit organizations will receive more than $3.7 million to carry on AAUW’s legacy of scholarship, research and action. Recipients will pursue graduate studies and community projects to empower women and girls in the United States and around the globe.
Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited U.S. institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low.
Matthews is originally from Tulsa, OK. She is working on her Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Control Systems. Matthews is a mentor for OSU's chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and an OK-LSAMP Bridge to Doctorate Fellow. One of her hobbies is working on cars and restoration of a 1977 Monte Carlo.
