CEAT Professional Development hosts 2016 ASSE Region III Student Leadership Conference
Tuesday, April 12, 2016
In a combined effort from the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (FPSET) program, CEAT Professional Development and Oklahoma State University - Fire Service Training (OSU-FST), OSU hosted the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Region III Student Leadership Conference.
The conference theme was Lessons in Leaderships.
“ASSE Region III wanted to bring the SLC back to a college campus, and as a grad of
the FPSET program there wasn't anywhere else we wanted to go," said Steven Gray, ASSE
Region III vice president. "The professionalism of the entire OSU team that helped
plan and coordinate the conference exceeded all of our expectations. SLC 2016 went
into the books as the largest SLC hosted at either the region or society level.”
This year’s conference was a huge success. Over 150 students, faculty and staff attended,
and included guests from Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. The conference opened the weekend
of April 1 at the OSU-FST training grounds and included a live fire demonstration
at the close of the evening. It continued on Saturday with classroom sessions and
hands-on training at the FPSET laboratory. Students had the opportunity to work at
eight stations throughout the late morning and early afternoon. Training was conducted
in: industrial fire pumps, fire sprinkler risers, residential fire sprinklers, fire
behavior, fire effects, fire alarm systems, hazardous materials incident response
and fire extinguishers. Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning was spent learning more
in the classroom and the conference concluded at noon on Sunday.
“As an alumni, I am very thankful to OSU and the staff for making this the greatest student leadership conference in the region and nation,” says Rixio Medina, 1977 FPSET alumna, 2013 CEAT Hall of Fame inductee and 2009 Distinguished Alumni.
