Spitler gives the keynote address for the European Geothermal Congress

Thursday, November 10, 2016

(STILLWATER, Okla., November 10, 2016) – Oklahoma State University Regents Professor and OG&E Energy Technology Chair Jeffrey Spitler gave a keynote address for the 2016 European Geothermal Congress (EGC) held in Strasbourg, France on September 21 and 22.

The European Geothermal Congress is the largest geothermal event in Europe. Held every three years, this conference hosts local, European and global leaders in this field. Spitler, as a representative of the United States and an expert in this field, spoke about the latest developments and trends in ground-source heat pump technology.

This renewable energy technology got its foothold in America here in Stillwater. Spitler has been at the forefront of the research and development of ground source heat pumps since 1990.

His reputation in the field of GSHP led to an invitation to speak about his research at Lund University in Sweden back in 1997, and he has actively collaborated with researchers from Lund and other Swedish universities since then. His collaborative efforts include development of the ground heat exchanger design software GLHEPRO in 1993 and development of methods for measuring thermal properties of the ground. These collaborative efforts have led to Spitler co-authoring 20 papers with Swedish researchers on the design of ground heat exchangers and thermal response tests. Many of these papers have been aimed at addressing implementation questions related to issues that arise during the design and installation of ground heat exchangers.

The technology of ground source heat pumps here at OSU has come a long way since its beginning in the 1970s. The keynote address reflects OSU’s global involvement in this technology
