Zeel Maheshwari wins CEAT Three Minute Thesis competition

Monday, March 7, 2016

(STILLWATER, Okla., March 7, 2016) – Zeel Maheshwari, doctorate student in electrical and computer engineering, won the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on February 18, 2015, with her thesis concentrated on smart integrated renewable energy systems (SIRES) for rural communities. Maheshwari will be competing in the OSU 3MT finals held on March 3, 2016.

“I would like to dedicate this achievement to my advisor Dr. Ramakumar, who thoroughly supported me for 3MT,” says Maheshwari. “His slogan, practice makes perfect, worked wonders for me and is the main reason for my success. It’s an honor to represent my college for the university-wide competition.”

The goal of her thesis is to “energize” the rural areas and not just “electrify” them. It is a viable and effective strategy to provide basic needs such as biogas for cooking, water for domestic and irrigation purposes and electrical energy for lighting, communication, cold storage, educational and small-scale industrial purposes, by smartly matching the needs to available resources. SIRES will promote sustainable socio-economic development and improve the living environment by fulfilling the basic energy requirements with the help of low-cost renewable technologies and intelligent energy management systems.

Maheshwari also won the people’s choice award. She received her bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology (affiliated to Vishveshwaraya Technological University), India in 2011. She completed her master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering at Oklahoma State University in December 2013.

Second place belongs to Saeed Piri, doctoral student of industrial engineering, with his thesis of Diagnosing Diabetic Eye Disease. Third place was Kevin Roehm, doctoral student of chemical engineering, with 3D Printing Nerves.
