CEAT Faculty Wins 2017 President’s Cup

STILLWATER, OKLA. – Faculty from the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology were awarded the President’s Cup for Creative Interdisciplinarity at the University Awards Convocation December 6, 2017 at the OSU ConocoPhillips Alumni Center.

The winning team, led by Sabit Ekin, assistant professor for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), consists of faculty members from four different departments and three different colleges. These include Ryan Reuter, associate professor for the Department of Animal Science, John Long, assistant professor for Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Chris Richards, professor for the Department of Animal Sciences, Richard Gajan, clinical professor in Entrepreneurship, and Jingtong Hu, assistant professor for ECE at the University of Pittsburg.

Oklahoma State University’s President’s Cup recognizes and rewards creative interdisciplinary instruction, research, and service. First prize included a traveling trophy, certificates and an award of $5,000 for professional development.

“The news that Dr. Ekin and his team are the recipient of the President’s Cup is very gratifying to us in ECE,” said Jeffrey L. Young, Department Head & OSURF Endowed Chair of Engineering at OSU. “It is further evidence that faculty in ECE are continuously striving to fulfill the bold vision of interdisciplinary research established by President Hargis.”

The winning project, Low Maintenance Livestock Monitoring via Environment Powered Internet of Things, develops a comprehensive, integrated livestock monitoring system that will help ranchers and dairy farmers monitor important individual animal and field management parameters of their animals including all-around health and location of livestock. This will improve production efficiency, human quality of life, and animal wellbeing. A holistic approach is being followed for designing and developing an integrated animal monitoring system that uses the internet of things technologies, and state-of-the-art energy harvesting methods to overcome battery life challenges. The project also enhances collaboration among the multi-disciplinary research team members which include expertise from ECE, Animal Science, Agricultural Engineering and Entrepreneurship to realize the best possible livestock monitoring and management system.

“More than twenty proposals were received and peer-reviewed by OSU faculty,” said Sheryl Tucker, vice provost and dean of the Graduate College. “The diverse, high-quality submissions made for a great competition.”
