OSU Fire Protection and Safety Technology students win national scholarships from the ASSE Foundation

Two Fire Protection and Safety Technology students have been awarded scholarships from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation.
Katharine Jolly was awarded the UPS scholarship and the Archie Moore Scholarship. These combined scholarships totaled over $6,000 in funds to be used for tuition, fees and other educational expenses.
Hongen Zhou was award the Nick D. Yin Scholarship, which included $3,000 in funds to be used for educational expenses.
Chartered in 1990 by the ASSE Board of Directors, the Foundation exists to provide programs and opportunities to advance the safety profession. The ASSE Foundation leads the safety profession on research initiatives that benefit the global community, while also providing educational opportunities, leadership development, and financial resources to benefit safety students and professionals.
Katie Jolly is a junior in the fire protection and safety engineering technology
program and hails from Elgin, OK. She has served the ASSE-OSU student section chapter
as secretary in 2015-16 and as vice president in 2016-17. Last year, she completed
an internship as a safety engineer intern with Valero Energy Corporation at their
Meraux, Louisiana, refinery and plans to return to Valero in the summer of 2017 at
the St. Charles, Louisiana, refinery.
She has received the OSU University Leadership Scholarship every semester she has attended Oklahoma State University.
After completing her bachelor’s degree in fire protection and safety engineering technology, she hopes to work in the oil and gas sector as a safety engineer. She also plans to further her education by entering the new OSU graduate program in fire safety and explosion protection.
Hongen Zhou is an international student from China, and a junior in fire protection
and safety engineering technology program. Since 2016, he has studied at Oklahoma
State University as a transfer student from Southwest Jiaotong University. He hopes
to further his studies in fire safety field after graduation to improve the safety
of the living environment in his homeland.
He is a member of the ASSE-OSU student section, as well as the OSU Chinese Students and Scholars Association.
