STILLWATER, Okla. – For the 23rd year, OSU CEAT’s Construction Management Technology (CMT) students competed at the Associated Schools of Construction Student Competitions in Dallas, TX on Feb. 17-19. This competition is held annually for higher education students interested in construction and construction related fields.
“This year we had four teams competing in the ASC Region 5 Competition,” said Dr. Heather Yates, program coordinator and associate professor of CMT. “This region is composed of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Our teams competed in the categories of Commercial Building, Design Build, Design Build International and Heavy Civil.”
Before heading to Dallas, OSU students worked 16 hours on Saturday, Feb. 17 to produce a proposal based on a Request for Proposal sent by the competition sponsors. The proposal includes an estimate, schedule, site logistics and safety.
“The Design Build teams were also responsible for the design, so three students from the School of Architecture at OSU were also on the respective Design Build teams,” said Yates. “This year we partnered with University of Salford to complete in the ASC Design Build International competition.”
The University of Salford is a public university in Salford, England, 1.5 miles west of Manchester. Originally named the Royal Technical Institute, Salford in 1896, it later gained university status in 1967. It has 20,520 students.
“Working with an international team provides OSU students an opportunity to learn about other cultures, and construction and design in that culture,” said Yates. “The OSU students had fun showing the international team Oklahoma. Two of the three students from the University of Salford had never been to the US before. The Salford students were an international blend as one was from Maldives, one from Latvia and one from England. Two of the OSU students were from the US and one was a transfer student from Mexico.”
Commercial category students were Hunter Daylor, Clint Dawson, Asa Gower, Janelle Struble, Devin Jones and Gustavo Rodriguez. Design Build category students were Kristen Fields, Richard Heid, Sage Ellis, Ryker Wallace, Andrew Mitchell and Audrey Hampton. International Design Build category students were Miguel Reyna, Blake Larsen and William Reynolds. Heavy Civil category students were Kyle Colvin, Martin Wigg, Alex McDonald, Jackson Adelman, Christopher Buckstaff and Iaan Hernandez.
“This was a rebuilding year,” said Yates. “Though we did not actually place in the top three of any category, two-thirds of the OSU participants are eligible to return and compete next year.”
