Oklahoma State University awards Engineers of Tomorrow scholarships to 50 Tulsa area students
Friday, March 9, 2018
Last night, 50 Tulsa area students were surprised with $2,000 scholarships to attend OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. The event was held March 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Helmerich Research Center in Tulsa.
The purpose of the Engineers of Tomorrow scholarship is to inspire middle school, high school and community college students to pursue STEM education and a degree in engineering at OSU-Tulsa or OSU-Stillwater. These scholarships were awarded to regional students who show an interest in STEM and helping younger STEM students succeed. The recipients will be able to utilize this scholarship once they are admitted into the OSU engineering program at OSU-Tulsa or OSU-Stillwater during their junior year of college.
“Research shows that the engineering/STEM education pipeline needs to start as early as elementary school in order to help young girls and boys realize they can address the grand challenges of the 21st century, through engineering,” said CEAT dean, Paul Tikalsky. “This unique scholarship program and other OSU efforts to start STEM camps across the state for elementary and middle school students are part of the CEAT vision to not wait until students are in high school to encourage them to pursue an engineering and technology-based career.”
The OSU Engineers of Tomorrow partners include OSU College of Engineering, Architecture
and Technology, OSU-Tulsa, Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, Tulsa Community College,
NORDAM and Flight Night.
NORDAM, headquartered in Tulsa, is one of the world’s largest independently owned
aerospace companies, employing 2,500 stakeholders across multiple facilities in North
America, Europe and Asia Pacific. NORDAM is a top choice for engineering, manufacturing,
maintaining and repairing components for business jets, commercial aircraft and military
warfighters around the globe.
Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance (TRSA) builds innovative pathways for students to access
high-impact careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Their promise to
ensure that education policy initiatives on a local, state and federal level appropriately
identify the needs and deploy vital resources responsibly and effectively to ensure
every student has access to the best possible STEM education.
“The Engineers of Tomorrow scholarship is a game changer for Green Country students
considering becoming engineers” said Xan Black, TRSA Program Director. “These generous
scholarships impact our students in many ways. Imagine the impact it would have on
a students’ self-esteem and confidence to win an engineering scholarship as a middle
schooler or even high school student!
“Thanks to TCC’s Tulsa Achieves program, Tulsa County students with a 2.0 GPA may attend TCC tuition free. The Engineers of Tomorrow scholarship provides assistance with that next financial step as students transition from TCC to OSU on their journey to engineering,” said Black. “This will change the lives of our students as they work in the light of knowing that no less than OSU along with TRSA, Flight Night and TCC have put a down payment on their future.”
