OSU CEAT Senior Academic Advisor, Kristal Soderstrom Junkens Elected President-Elect for OACADA

Monday, February 5, 2018

STILLWATER, Okla. – Kristal Soderstrom Junkens, OSU CEAT senior academic advisor, has been elected President-Elect for the Oklahoma Association of Academic Advising.

OACADA is a group which works in conjunction with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) to provide professional development for Academic Advisors at multiple levels. The NACADA mission extends to regional and state groups to promote student success by advancing the field of academic advising globally. They provide opportunities for professional development, networking and leadership for a diverse membership. At the OACADA level, they strive to provide two academic conferences a year to assist Oklahoma Academic Advisors in their own growth and development.

“My own personal experience with OACADA and NACADA began when I was invited to be the Treasurer for OACADA,” said Soderstrom Junkens. “I held this position for two and a half years. I then was the NACADA Region 7 Conference Co-Chair for the Spring 2017 conference. After a short stint in Texas, I was very happy to become an Academic Advisor for OSU CEAT. This December, I attended an OACADA conference and was asked if I would mind being nominated for OACADA President Elect. I look forward to working with the other members of the OACADA committee to continue to provide professional development for my peers.”

OACADA considers their conference more accessible in times where funds for a larger conference may not be available. Each conference is one day and usually offered in February/March and October/November time frame. The conference time is utilized to develop a Best of State presentation that is invited to attend the NACADA Region 7 conference that takes place each spring. Region 7 is comprised of Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. The Best of Region 7 presentation is then invited to attend the Annual Conference that takes place each fall.
