OSU FPST Alumnus Will Serve as President of ASSP

STILLWATER, Okla. – For the first time in over 100 years, an Oklahoma State University Fire Protection Safety Technology alumnus will serve as president of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). 

Rixio Medina was recently elected to serve as president starting July 1, 2018 and will serve through June 30, 2019. 

Medina holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in industrial security from the University of Central Missouri. He is a certified safety professional, certified protection professional and a Fellow of ASSE. Medina served as a presidential appointee to the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and was president of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. He was introduced to the CEAT Hall of Fame in 2013 and recognized as a Distinguished Alumni by the OSU Alumni Association in 2009.

“As an OSU alumnus, it is an honor and privilege to serve as president of ASSP, the world’s oldest safety and health professional organization” said Medina. 

For over 100 years, ASSP has supported occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals in their efforts to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.  They provide education, advocacy, standards development and a professional community to more than 37,000 members in order to advance their careers and the OSH profession as a whole.
