OSU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Wins Society Award

Friday, March 16, 2018

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State University College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVE) has been selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee on Education to receive the 2018 Walter LeFevre Award in the small program category. The award will be presented at the National Civil Engineering Department Heads Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. on May 31, 2018. The award is given for contributions in promoting professional licensure, ethics and professionalism in an undergraduate civil engineering program.

CIVE at OSU is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Inc., and has been accredited since October 1, 1936. The program awarded 48 bachelor degrees in the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters, with an additional two in summer 2017, for a total of 50 graduates for the year, just barely in the small program category.

“This award recognizes that we had a substantial increase over past years in both the number of students who took and who passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam,” said Dr. Norb Delatte, M.R. Lohmann Endowed Professor of Engineering and head of CIVE. “This is one of the critical steps that students take toward becoming an Engineer Intern and eventually earning the Professional Engineer License. The program produced 84 percent more Engineer Interns than the previous year, from roughly the same size graduating class.”

The ASCE represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. This award is named for E. Walter LeFevre, PhD, PE, Dist.M.ASCE who endowed the award to recognize actions in promoting licensure, ethics and professionalism. The award was established by action of the Society in 2007.
