The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Oklahoma State University received the 2023 Walter LeFevre Award for excellence in promoting professionalism, ethics and licensure in its civil engineering education curriculum. The award was presented at the 2023 National Civil Engineering Department Heads Conference on June 13 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
The annual award was established in 2007 with an endowment from E. Walter LeFevre, Ph.D., P.E., Hon.M.ASCE, longtime ASCE leader and member of the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Walt earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering at Oklahoma State University.
The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Oklahoma State University demonstrates a strong emphasis on professional and ethical practice of engineering to its students through coursework — including four courses dedicated to professional practice and ethics topics — faculty requirements, and preparation of students to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The program has seen an increase in the number of students passing the exam in recent years, with passing rates above the national average. The School recently adopted an Honor Pledge for the program through which students commit to adhering to the University Code of Conduct and the ASCE Code of Ethics.
“Our students and faculty take ethical and professional responsibilities very seriously. Most of our faculty either have Professional Engineer licenses or are actively working toward them. The School’s curriculum stresses our responsibilities to the health, safety, and welfare of the public,” said Norb Delatte, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, MR Lohmann Professor and head of the school.
“ASCE’s educational activities community is pleased to recognize the Oklahoma State University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering for its work in preparing the next generation of engineers. By emphasizing ethics, professionalism, and licensure, they are developing the profession’s future leaders,” said Col. Aaron T. Hill, Jr., Ph.D., P.E, M.ASCE, chair of ASCE’s Committee on Education.
Award nominations were reviewed and winners selected by the ASCE Committee on Education.
