The Rural Energy Assessment Center — part of the Division of Engineering Technology within Oklahoma State University's College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology — is assisting in energy conservation for agricultural producers and rural small businesses across Oklahoma.
Designed to reduce energy consumption and promote renewable energy adoption, the program offers energy audits at a fraction of the typical cost, providing significant savings and access to U.S. Department of Agriculture funding opportunities.
REAC’s comprehensive audits assess energy-consuming equipment such as lighting, HVAC systems and building envelopes to identify inefficiencies and recommend cost-saving measures. Normally priced between $10,000 and $20,000, these audits are available through the REAC program for just $500 for businesses with annual energy costs under $100,000 that fit the Small Business Administration’s definition of a small business in rural areas as agri-businesses anywhere in Oklahoma.
By implementing recommendations, clients save 5% to 15% annually on energy costs while reducing operational expenses. Many also qualify for USDA Rural Energy for America Program grants, which fund upgrades like energy-efficient lighting, improved insulation and renewable energy systems, including solar panels and wind turbines.
"At the Rural Energy Assessment Center, our mission is to drive sustainable growth for agricultural producers and rural small businesses by making energy efficiency both accessible and affordable,” said Dr. Hitesh D. Vora, director of REAC.

“Through our comprehensive energy audits, we empower businesses to reduce costs, optimize energy use, and invest in renewable solutions that pave the way for long-term resilience. By leveraging USDA support, we are not just cutting energy expenses — we are building a more sustainable and prosperous future for Oklahoma’s rural communities."
Since its establishment, the REAC program has conducted 34 audits, resulting in nearly $290,437 in client savings. Most participants also secured USDA grants or loans to implement the recommended measures. As the program enters its fourth funding cycle, plans are underway to expand outreach, integrate the latest in energy technology and continue supporting Oklahoma’s rural businesses in achieving energy independence and sustainability.
“The Rural Energy Assessment Center provided a knowledgeable and efficient assessment of my facility,” said Carson Vinyard, farmer and manager of V&V Partnership. “Their team quickly grasped the project details and delivered the work on time, ensuring a smooth and professional experience.”
Beyond its direct impact, REAC also cultivates the development of a clean energy workforce. OSU students gain hands-on experience conducting audits and implementing solutions under the guidance of REAC staff, preparing them for careers in the energy sector.
