Oklahoma State University welcomed Benjamin Peters, Hazel Rogers Associate Professor and Chair of Media & Communication at the University of Tulsa, to campus on Thursday, Sept. 25, for the first Global Briefing Series of the fall semester.

Peters’ presentation, “Shifting Digital Environments: U.S. Geopolitics & the Future of Ukraine,” explored how digital systems shape authority and influence in global politics. He examined how media technologies distribute and concentrate power unevenly, drawing connections between historical Soviet experiences and Ukraine's current challenges.

In addition to his role at TU, Peters is an affiliated fellow at Yale Law School. His research spans Soviet artificial intelligence, Russian hackers and the global history of media theory. Much of his work focuses on the intersection of technology, power, and knowledge, particularly in Ukraine and Russia.

Approaching the subject from both critical and historical perspectives, Peters underscored the influence of technology on authority, sovereignty and knowledge during times of conflict. His presentation encouraged the audience to reflect on how evolving digital infrastructures may shape not only the future of the war in Ukraine but also the direction of U.S. foreign policy and global governance in the digital era.

The Global Briefing Series, hosted by the  School of Global Studies, is a forum for dynamic conversations on pressing international topics. It allows students and community members to engage directly with leading experts and gain deeper insights into global affairs.
