Two-part series explores the adventures of the USS Oklahoma

Friday, September 27, 2024

The USS Oklahoma participated in two world wars, notably sinking during the battle of Pearl Harbor. This year marks the 110 anniversary of the ship’s first launch in 1914, as well as the 80th anniversary of its decommissioning in 1944.

The Oklahoma State University Library, in partnership with the Stillwater Public Library and the OSU Department of Political Science, will host a two-part series diving into the history of the USS Oklahoma and the story of the people who served on the vessel. Both presentations will be led by Dr. Peter Rudloff, OSU associate professor of political science.

Rudloff emphasized the importance of these events, noting that the USS Oklahoma not only holds historical significance but also maintains a lasting connection to Oklahoma through those who served on it.

“This is an opportunity to learn about the history of the United States, its role in the world and key early 20th-century events through the story of the battleship named after our state,” Rudloff said.

The first event, “Adventures on the USS Oklahoma: 1914-1941,” will be at 6:30 p.m, Oct. 8. The series concludes with “The Fall and Rise of the USS Oklahoma” at 6:30 p.m, Nov. 11.  Both events will be held at the Stillwater Public Library Auditorium.

The talks will explore the captivating story of the USS Oklahoma and its crew. Rudloff’s talks will honor those who served on the ship and explore why the USS Oklahoma was built, its contributions to U.S. naval advancements and the experiences of its crew. The attack at Pearl Harbor as well as the aftermath include several Oklahoma ties.

Both events are free and open to the public. To receive email or text reminders for the events, sign up here. To learn more about the USS Oklahoma, visit the website.
