Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology design students teamed up with some Okmulgee fourth-graders to bring their drawings to life as digital art.
OSUIT Visual Communications Collective Student Club transformed the inventive artwork of local fourth-grade students, producing dynamic digital compositions. This project enabled OSUIT students to employ their technical and creative skills while showing these young Okmulgee artists what they can be capable of if they keep working on their art.
Each participating OSUIT student picked two to three drawings from a group of approximately 20 fourth-graders. They then transformed the drawings using software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, leveraging skills from their OSUIT courses.
OSUIT students successfully presented the completed digital renderings to the fourth graders during their final week of school.
The project's positive effect was clear. The fourth-grade teacher shared the children's reaction with OSUIT faculty member and Visual Communications Club advisor Desirae Bach: "They absolutely loved them! They were so excited!!"
"By dedicating their time and talent, our students helped young artists feel seen and valued, proving that small acts of kindness can have a big impact," Bach said.
Kamie Crawford, OSUIT’s director of student life, said making community connections is an important goal of student clubs.
“This project is the exact reason we encourage our student clubs and organizations to make community connections! In fact, part of our Student Club programming at OSUIT is built to foster campus and community connection through our student clubs and organizations," Crawford said. "Visual Communications Collective has been in charge of various projects, but this one is by far the most creative! I'm thrilled with this connection to the community, and VCC is taking advantage of the opportunity to promote programs at OSUIT to youth in the area."
Ultimately, the project thrilled the fourth-graders and gave OSUIT's design students a real-world design experience.
