What is a land-grant university?
The land-grant university tradition began with the Morrill Act of 1862. The act's purpose was to "promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life." These institutions were created to powerfully impact society through teaching, research and Extension.
Today, land-grant universities are distinct from other higher education institutions. They instill individual leadership in pursuit of the common good and nurture career competence to cultivate communities. The land-grants also stand as economic development engines for the people they serve. For OSU, this means meeting Oklahoma's workforce needs, linking research to critical sectors of the state's economy and making communities better through Extension.
