Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology graduate David Pearson is making international waves through his exceptional performance in the CAT Dealer Prep Program, sponsored by Foley Equipment in Wichita, Kansas.
A summer 2024 Summa Cum Laude graduate with a 3.96 GPA, Pearson will represent the U.S. at the prestigious Dealer Top Apprentice Program in Melbourne, Australia, this February.
Pearson’s achievements highlight OSUIT’s mission as a land-grant institution and leader in polytechnic education. By offering applied learning experiences and forging strong industry partnerships — such as its collaboration with Caterpillar — OSUIT equips students to excel in today’s competitive global industries.
Pearson’s road to Melbourne began with his nomination to compete in the ThinkBIG Top Tech Challenge 2024 at the Caterpillar Learning Center in Peoria, Illinois. To qualify, he needed to score at least 80 on the Associated Equipment Dealers test. He surpassed expectations, setting an OSUIT record with a score of 92, which secured one of eight coveted spots to compete against top students from ThinkBIG schools across the U.S.
In Peoria, Pearson placed fourth, earning the opportunity to represent the U.S. in Melbourne alongside three other ThinkBIG qualifiers. This marks the 46th DTAP competition and the fourth year OSUIT students have earned the honor since ThinkBIG schools joined the event in 2019.
Kenneth Trantham, an OSUIT instructor, praised Pearson’s dedication.
“David exemplifies OSUIT’s commitment to excellence in applied learning," Trantham said. "His work ethic, academic achievements, and leadership throughout the program showcase the power of connecting education with real-world industry needs.”
Pearson is the sixth OSUIT graduate to compete at DTAP, underscoring the university’s role in advancing workforce development and providing access to globally competitive careers.
“By partnering with industry leaders like Caterpillar, we ensure our students are ready to lead in high-demand technical fields,” Trantham said.
The upcoming DTAP competition in Melbourne is not only a milestone for Pearson but also a testament to OSUIT’s impact in preparing the next generation of technical professionals through innovative, hands-on education. As the central hub for OSU Polytech, the university continues to transform higher education, creating unparalleled opportunities for students like Pearson to thrive in the global workforce.
