East Meets West: OSU veterinarians in China

Two veterinarians from Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences recently traveled to China to share their expertise on equine veterinary medicine, specifically on acupuncture and reproduction techniques.
Chris Winslow, DVM, theriogenology lecturer, and Reed Holyoak, DVM, Ph.D., DACT, Bullock Professorship in Equine Theriogenology and head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at OSU’s Veterinary Medical Hospital, spent 10 days in China.
Holyoak served as an instructor and equine acupuncture lab coordinator for the International Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine course at the South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou. He also lectured on integrating traditional Chinese veterinary medicine in animal reproductive practice. Pictured above is the poster announcing Holyoak's presentation.
While he was there, Holyoak presented gestational diseases and basic ultrasonography in the mare to the College of Veterinary Medicine students. In addition, he conducted a wet lab for advanced equine students in gestational and fetal assessment in the mare.
Holyoak also met with President Dr. Luo ShaoMing and vice presidents of the Zhongkai University, also in Guangzhou, regarding the possibility of clinical instruction by OSU’s Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department. The two had been introduced by Holyoak’s colleague, Gaungping Chen, Ph.D., when ShaoMing was visiting OSU several weeks before.
Winslow attended the International Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine course at the South China Agricultural University and served as an assistant within the equine acupuncture wet labs held at the former 2000 Olympic Equestrian Games Center in Guangzhou.
Before leaving for Stillwater, Holyoak traveled to nearby Foshan where he presented an overview of OSU’s fourth/clinical year at the veterinary center to the dean and department heads of Foshan University College of Veterinary Medicine, their graduate students and faculty members to give them insights into the clinical experiences of OSU’s fourth-year students.
This was Holyoak’s fourth trip to China and his third to Guangzhou. This was Winslow’s first visit to China.
