Recipes for homemade dog treats

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

From the OSU Department of Wellness, here are two recipes for healthy dog treats you can make at home.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups whole grain oat flour

2 large eggs

¾ cup canned or fresh pumpkin

½ cup unsalted natural creamy peanut butter

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 tablespoon baking powder

In a small mixing bowl, whisk flour and baking powder. In a larger bowl, whip together peanut butter and coconut oil. Add eggs and then pumpkin beating until it is smooth. Add the flour and mix until a dough forms.

On a cutting board covered with wax paper, form the dough into a symmetrical disk. Top with another piece of wax paper.  Flatten the dough with a rolling pin making the disk an even thickness. If dough is sticky, add a little oat flour; however, biscuits look best without adding the flour. Using biscuit cutter (bone shapes are nice), cut out shapes. Place parchment paper on baking sheet and place cut shapes on top in the pan. Put pan in refrigerator until ready to bake. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. When ready, bake biscuits for 25 minutes or until light brown. Biscuits will keep well in the refrigerator for one week or freeze for later use.
