Animal Tornado Victims: Where’s Mom?

Seven horses were recently brought to Oklahoma State University’s Veterinary Medical Hospital following a tornado that touched down near Sulphur, Okla. One of the more severely injured horses was a gray mare that was brought in with her one-month-old foal.

Immediately upon their arrival a team of fourth year veterinary students, interns and residents began treating a huge gash on the mare’s right front leg. The mare was taken to surgery where Dr. Darla Moser, equine surgery resident, and her team went to work to repair the severe carpal laceration. They debrided it, irrigated it and closed the wound with about 40 sutures. The mare is expected to make a full recovery.

Following the May 2013 tornados, the OSU Animal Relief Fund was established. Veterinary specialists at OSU’s Veterinary Medical Hospital are able to treat these animal victims, at no cost to the owners, as long as money remains available in that fund.
